Frequently Asked Questions About ADA Mats

ADA mats play an important role in ensuring sidewalks and walkways are accessible to those with a disability. These types of mats are useful to those in wheelchairs, as well as those with visual impairments. If you are installing a new sidewalk or walkway, a mat may be something you need to install. Unfortunately, many people have never heard of these types of mats and have no idea what they are and how they should select one for their walkway. Here are some of the questions you may have, as well as the answers.

What Are ADA Mats?

Sidewalks and walkways have dips in them to allow someone in a wheelchair, using a walker or pushing a stroller to leave the sidewalk or walkway smoothly, without having to take a step. Where these dips are, there may be a surface that has raised bumps on it. This surface is typically a different color than the walkway and is generally yellow, but can be other colors. The surface that has the raised bumps on it is the mat. The mat is designed to help steady a wheelchair so it doesn’t roll off of the ramp or dip. The bumps also help to guide those who are visually impaired, so they know where they can safely get off the walkway without having to step down, or where they may be entering a new walkway after crossing a street.

Are There Different Styles of ADA Mats?

There are different styles of mats available. The various styles include radius systems, cast-in-place composite shell pavers, cast-in-place replaceable panel and surface applied units. The major difference between the various mats is the shape of the mat and how the mat is installed.

What Should I Consider When Selecting ADA Mats?

When you are looking to select the right mat for your project, the first factor you need to consider is where the mat is going and its shape. If the mat is going on a curved surface, you may need a radius system. If your mat is going on a rectangular surface, any other option will work for you. From there, you need to think about whether you want to be able to easily replace the mat if the bumps break or wear out, and how you plan on installing the mat. All of these factors will guide you toward the right mat for your project.

If you are looking to have new sidewalks or walkways built that need to be accessible for those with disabilities, the mats may be something that needs to be incorporated into your design.
