Most people assume concrete is concrete. You grab a bag, mix it with water, pour it, done. And honestly, for a small garden project or a wobbly fence post, that thinking is probably fine. But spend five minutes talking to anyone who’s laid a driveway incorrectly or watched a shed base crack clean across after one cold winter, and you’ll quickly realise there’s a bit more to it than that.
The issue isn’t the mixing process itself. It’s choosing the wrong product in the first place, which is an easier mistake to make than most suppliers will admit.
Not All Mixes Are Doing the Same Job
There’s a reason builders talk about “spec” before they even think about quantities. Different applications genuinely demand different concrete compositions. A standard general-purpose mix might work fine for a garden path, but if you’re pouring a garage floor that’ll have a car sitting on it year-round, or footings for a structural wall, you need something rated for that load. Using a weaker mix to save a few quid is the kind of shortcut that ends up costing several times more to fix later.
Broadly speaking, the things that vary between mixes are the cement-to-aggregate ratio, the grade strength (usually described in C-ratings like C10, C20, C25 and so on), and whether there are any added components like plasticisers or accelerators. C10 is lightweight stuff, good for infill and non-structural blinding layers. C25 and above starts handling serious loads. Most domestic driveways land somewhere around C25 to C30.
Ready-mix bags you buy from a builder’s merchant are usually pre-blended, which takes some of the guesswork out of it. But they’re not all the same, and the labelling isn’t always as clear as it should be. Worth reading the small print before you load up the trolley.
Where to Actually Source It
For smaller jobs, bagged concrete mix from a local merchant or a trade supplier online does the job without requiring a minimum order. For anything over, say, three or four cubic metres, most people look at ready-mixed delivery, because hand-mixing that volume is genuinely exhausting and the results can be inconsistent if you’re working from multiple batches with slightly different water ratios.
If you’re doing your own research before buying, it’s worth looking at a proper trade supplier for concrete mix supplies rather than just defaulting to a big DIY chain. Trade-focused suppliers tend to stock a wider range of grades and often give you clearer spec information. You’ll also generally find better pricing per bag once you’re buying in any kind of volume, even if it’s just twenty or thirty bags for a modest project.
Delivery matters too, and it’s one of those things people forget to account for. Concrete mix bags are heavy, and if you’re ordering online, check whether the delivery is kerbside or if they’ll bring it to where you’re actually working. That distinction can save a lot of back strain on a Saturday morning.
The Timing Thing People Keep Getting Wrong
Concrete doesn’t care about your schedule. It cures on its own timeline, and temperature plays a massive role in that. In the UK, pouring in cold weather (anything consistently below around 5°C) slows curing dramatically and can cause real problems with strength if it freezes before it’s set. Summer heat brings the opposite issue; too fast, and the surface can crack before the interior has caught up.
There are admixtures and accelerators that can help in tricky conditions, but for a first-time or occasional DIYer, the simplest advice is to check the forecast and plan your pour for mild, dry weather. Not revolutionary, but a lot of cracked concrete in British back gardens comes down to someone who was impatient about the weather window.
It also helps to wet the sub-base slightly before pouring on hot days so the dry ground doesn’t pull moisture out of the mix too quickly. Small thing, but it makes a difference.
Getting the Quantities Right
Underordering is annoying but manageable. Running out mid-pour is a disaster, because you get a cold joint where the two batches meet and that joint is always going to be a weak point. The standard advice is to add 10% to your calculated volume as a buffer, and if you’ve never calculated concrete volume before, there are decent calculators online that just ask for length, width and depth in metres.
The maths isn’t the hard part. The hard part is accepting that doing it properly at the start is almost always cheaper than fixing it later.
