Nowadays, in our homes it is common to have a desktop computer. These computers are usually employed to work (documents, spreadsheets, etc.) or as multimedia centers (play music, videos, games, etc.). These tasks are not too complex, so from the point of view of the computer resources, these tasks do not employ all the available computer resources. For this reason, it is possible to say that, in most cases, desktop computers are underused. Furthermore if we take into account the impressive hardware specifications of the current desktop computers.
To sum up, there are lots of computing resources which are wasted and that can be helpful in a scientific research project by donating these resources. How can I collaborate?
There is a technology known as Volunteer Computing that allows us to collaborate with a scientific research project by donating our computing resources.
Volunteer computing is an agreement between citizens or institutions (volunteers) who donates their computing resources (computers) to research projects of their interest (medicine, chemistry, physics, climate prediction, etc.).A large number of computers working together can provide a huge computing power, which can be used by different research projects for studying theories, performing experiments, etc.
